A Birthday, a Blessing, and a Black Ford Truck

September 7, 2025

Life changes in ways you never quite expect.

Let me tell you a little story about Cindy.

Early in our marriage, when we just had a couple of little ones running around and big dreams in our hearts, I told her, “When you turn 40, I’m going to get you a black convertible.” She loved the idea. A fun car in her favorite color, something just for her, something that said, “You’ve made it to 40 in style.”

Back then, forty felt like a lifetime away. We were young, and life was just beginning.

But as the years passed, so did the shape of our dreams.

Our family grew. Our home became louder, fuller, and more blessed than we could have imagined. And somewhere along the way, Cindy’s dreams began to shift too. She found joy in gardening and yard work, in projects that left her hands dirty and her heart full. Whether it was planting flowers or repurposing an old piece of furniture, she loved putting her hands to work.

And that convertible? It slowly faded into the background.

Instead, she started saying things like, “It sure would be nice to have a truck around here while you’re gone. One I can haul things in. One I can actually use.”

Every now and then, when we were out, she would spot a vintage truck and smile. “Now that would be fun to have,” she’d say. Not for show. Not to impress. Just simple. Strong. Useful. That’s Cindy. She’s not about flash. She’s about purpose. About making things better. About getting things done.

And deep down, I remembered those moments.

I told myself, one day, if the Lord allowed, I’d find her that truck.

And now here we are. Cindy turned 40 today. Ten beautiful children later. A thousand memories behind us. A heart that has been poured out in love and sacrifice every single day. I wanted to do something that would speak her language.

Not something flashy.

Something thoughtful.

Something useful.

Something that felt like her.

Then I came across a 1986 Ford F-150. Black, just like we always talked about.

As I looked into it, I learned it had belonged to a gentleman named Mr. Bob. He was a former Marine who bought it brand new and took great pride in caring for it. He passed away earlier this year at the age of 85, and now his siblings were parting with the truck that meant so much to him.

When I shared my heart with Mr. Bob’s brother and told him who it was for, he appreciated knowing it would go to a home that would truly value it.

And in that moment, I knew this was the one.

So I kept it quiet. I made the arrangements. And today, on her birthday, I surprised Cindy with the keys to her very own black vintage truck. She had no idea it was coming.

A gift from me, and in a way, a gift from a Marine who understood what it meant to take care of what matters.

And just to make sure everyone knows whose truck it is, I got her a custom plate that reads MOMOF10. Because that’s exactly who she is—a strong, beautiful, loving mama to ten amazing kids.

Now she can haul plants, repurpose treasures, swing by the coffee shop, or just take a quiet drive.

She still got her two-passenger vehicle for her 40th birthday.

Not the sleek convertible we once joked about, but something even better.

A classic truck with strength, purpose, and a whole lot of heart. Just like her.

Cindy, you are the most incredible woman I know. I love you more than words could ever express. Thank you for being you. For loving big, working hard, and filling our lives with grace, grit, and laughter.

Happy 40th, sweetheart. I pray this next decade brings you joy, strength, and a whole lot of rides in that truck.

You’ve never needed a convertible to shine.

But you sure do look good in a vintage Ford truck.
